Model Classroom for EDU 614
My model classroom is a kindergarten classroom in the Salem Public Schools with 17 students. The classroom is 10 girls and 7 boys. They come from varying backgrounds, from low-income children to upper-middle. Six of the children would qualify for free lunch, the rest are above that income level, but only 3 are from a high income bracket. The rest are lower middle income. There are 3 ELL students who speak little to no English. One other student is dyslexic. The kids come from different learning backgrounds - some are already writing their names, while others have not even held a pencil. None are yet reading but a few can identify some sight words.
The classroom is cozy and inviting, with a special area for reading (a “book nook”) that has a collection of various picture books that feature characters of all different races and from different backgrounds so that all kids see themselves represented. For seating, I will use a flexible seating model. In this model, children choose where to sit, and there are various different things to sit on. I would like to have stools, cushions, even mats for being on the floor. The goal is for students to choose where to sit that will help them be their best “learning selves.” As long as students are on task (as much as a kindergartener can be), they can sit where they like.
